Billiards – More Than 8-ball Pool

Josephine Thunder asked:

8-ball is the most popular billiard game in the world. It is so popular, that 8-ball pool is almost a synonym for billiards. However, 8-ball is only a part of a one big happy family of billiard games.

8-ball pool, 9-ball pool, snooker, one pocket, balkline are all cue sports games. They all share a rectangular cloth-covered table, a long cue stick, a set of balls and an ambition to score, but they differ in their rules, objects, and even their terminology.

Generally, billiard games divide into two types: pocket billiard games and carom billiard games. Pocket billiard games, usually referred to as pool games, are the type of billiard played on a table that has six pockets. In pocket billiard games, the players aspire to sink the balls into the table pockets, according to specific games rules.

Carom billiard games, on the other hand, are played on pocketless tables. Only three billiard balls are involved in the carom games. The purpose of the players in most carom games is to maneuver their cue ball so it will carom off the other two balls, again, according to the specific requirements of the game.

8-ball pool is a pocket billiard game. Other popular pocket billiard games include 9-ball pool, 14.1 continuous (formerly known as straight pool) and even snooker. Snooker is the most popular cue sports in the UK. Even though snooker is played on a pocketed pool table, it is not governed by the same association that administrates pocket billiard rules. Therefore, pocket billiard general rules do not apply to snooker.

The equipment used in snooker games is also different from the one used in pocket billiard tournaments. For example, the snooker table is a bit larger than the standard pool table plus its pockets are narrower. The terminology used in both billiard games is different as well. While pool players’ goal is to “pocket” the “object balls”, snooker players aim to “pot” the “red” or the “on-ball”.

Snooker & Pool: Get a Grip!

Pete Williams asked:

In snooker or pool, the grip is where every stroke starts, get this wrong and you will find that more and more of your shots are being missed.

The first thing that players tend to do (especially those new to the game) is grip the cue too tight. Why is this a problem? This causes a problem as the muscles in the arm will tighten through the shot, this can cause a lot of unwanted sidespin or cause us to miss the right spot on the cue ball entirely.

To be a successful player your grip needs to be relaxed and maintain a constant pressure throughout every shot, whether it be a delicate cut or a powerful draw stroke. Every time, where possible, the grip pressure has to be constant.

If the grip is too loose then the opposite can happen, the cue can be dropped whilst attempting a pot or literally get thrown out of the hand.

As with most things there is never a definitive right or wrong answer and it is about finding a position on the cue that is comfortable for you. Here are some helpful hints:

Find the balance point of your cue by balancing it on your index finger until it stops wobbling

Your grip should be behind this point so that the weight of the cue goes through the ball

Experiment with your hand in different positions and find something comfortable

6-10 inches behind the balance point is a good start

Grip the cue with index and middle finger and the thumb on top (creates a “V” between thumb and index finger)

Palm should be touching the cue and then move away when going through your stroke

Remember the key thing is to keep the grip relaxed, just feel for yourself the tension in your arm if you grip the cue too tightly. Tension in the arm will mean you miss more shots.

If you follow all these tips you’ll find that your snooker or pool will improve, remember get a grip…

Online Snooker Rules

brislet asked:

Snooker is a totally different game than pool, although its origins come from the same place.  Snooker is played on a pool table with larger dimensions and with a different set of balls and longer cue sticks.

In Snooker, in addition to the white cue ball, there are 21 target balls, 15 red and 6 colored.  Each ball color has a different point value.  The red balls are worth 1 point, the yellow balls are worth 2, the green are worth 3, the brown are worth 4, the blue are worth 5, the pink are worth 6 and the black is worth 7.

Here’s how the game works.  First you must pocket a red ball and then after every red ball that’s pocketed, you should pocket a color ball.  This will allow you to gain the point value of the colored ball.  If there are still red balls on the table, the colored balls are returned to their place on the table (there is a designated location for each colored ball) in order to continue gaining points.  When there are no more red balls on the table, then the players must aim to pocket the colored balls.  This must be done according to their point value.  The overall objective of the game is to get more points than your opponent by the end of the game.

If a player causes the white cue ball to hit the wrong ball (either a colored before a red, or the wrong color at the end of the game because it’s out of order) then it’s considered a foul.  When a player gets a foul, the player’s turn is over and his opponent gains points for the foul.  The opponent can allow the player to then do-over the hit and if the player with a foul continues to foul (three in a row), then he automatically loses the frame.

Online snooker is played the same as offline snooker.  Many players like to play snooker online in order to practice their skills and learn additional strategies as they go along.  It’s a great way for players who are learning snooker (and who might not have access to snooker tables, etc.), to play the game and develop their personal skills and strategies.

Golf Tips: Never Hit the Ball Until You Know Where It’s Going – the Crucial Role of the Target Line

Paul Thornley asked:

The first step to playing fantastic golf is realising that there is an essential part to the game that has been there since the first round was ever played by shepherds with crooks and stones on the links of the Scottish Highlands.

That essential part, the vital thing to remember at all times, is the intended line to the target, from the ball to the hole or the fairway. Now commonly known as the ‘target line’, its importance is a critical thing that you simply must understand if you are going to develop your game.

The point at which you make the commitment to hit every shot down the target line you is the point from which your game will start to improve.

The great Jack Nicklaus never hit a golf shot in his whole life without making sure that he stood behind his golf ball and picked a point just two to three feet in front of his ball that was on the target line.

The essential part of the pre-shot routine is to stand behind the ball, looking down the target line and picking out the intended spot for the ball to end up, then starting the ball down your target line.

World snooker champion Cliff Thorburn, a highly competitive golfer, played off two and was incredibly difficult to beat. His concentration was incredible and it came from his involvement in matches in Canada during his youth where players were competing for prizes thousands of dollars and because of this, every single shot counted.

It was when I asked Cliff what made him so competitive, and how it was he holed so many putts just when he needed them, that I realised the importance of the target line.

Cliff said he would never, ever hit a shot until he knew where it was going; it was as simple as that. Whether he was playing golf or snooker, he would never make a pass at the ball or attempt to hit it until he was absolutely convinced that he knew where it was going. He was meticulous; always knowing in his mind where the ball was going to end up.

And that is the crucial lesson that I learned and focused on all the way through my golfing career, and it is the lesson that I share with everyone I coach. If you want to turn your game around from this point onwards then bear in mind those words that Cliff Thorburn said: never hit the ball until you know where it is going.

Succeed at Betting – What the Professionals All Know

Paul Ellis asked:

The similarities between operating a successful betting portfolio and a financial investment portfolio are amazingly uncanny. It is little surprise that the co-founders of Betfair, Andrew Black and Edward Wray, are both ex city traders. I am a firm believer in the fact that a free market will always reflect the perceived value, or odds of an event occurring – this is where the professionals step in – when the perceived value does not equate to the “true” value.

All the successful Professional Gamblers I know personally, base most of their reasoning on this divergence – through sheer skill and hard work!

However, it is vital to understand the long and short term fluctuations in the market, and therefore it is important to consider the following when creating your portfolio:

1. Diversification

Just as a financial portfolio will often balance risk across differing market sectors, your betting portfolio should always be balanced. For example, if the different methods are all centered on the performance of the favourites in Horse Racing, you are exposing yourself to a potential loss across the board on a day when the favourites simply “have a bad day”. In order to balance this, my personal portfolio contains systems that are proven and profitable, but are each looking at differing types of races and bets.

As a guide, from horse racing I am looking at proven systems relying on:

* Favourites winning

* Horses placing

* Outsiders placing

* Each way “steals”

* Horses Losing (Laying)

In addition, whilst Horse Racing will almost definitely figure in a professionals portfolio, it is useful to diversify across sports. Though I specialize in Tennis personally, I am also looking for opportunities in Football, Darts, Snooker, Golf etc and even “Novelty Bets” such as the X-Factor or Eurovision if the right conditions emerge.

2. Time and Effort

Where possible, try to pick methods that will fit in with your lifestyle and available time. You will find it extremely difficult, if not impossible, to follow a system that relies on placing sequential bets during the course of the day which are dependent on previous results. Where this problem can be overcome, by the use of a specifically designed bot, this won’t be an issue. But when starting out, do try to use methods that are achievable within your daily routine.

3. Balancing Risk

In addition to balancing risk through the diversification mentioned above, you will also have to give consideration to the “weighting” you apply to each method you use. By this I mean balancing the risk/reward ratios against the probability of winning, and potential length of losing streaks.

For example, although all of the systems I use within my portfolio are proven to show a profit over the long term, a system based around horses placing will produce more wins (at lower odds) than a system looking at outsiders winning. As a rule of thumb, I try to ensure that the total across all systems on a daily basis never risks more than 10% of my bank. This may be split with 1% risk through one system, 2% on another, 3% on another etc etc. The risk varies in line with the expected percentage of winning bets.

4. Slowly and Steady

Be under no illusions, we are in this business for long term profitability, so when starting out, try not to be too ambitious with your staking. There will be a balance of winning and losing streaks across any method you use, that is the inescapable nature of statistics. If you are overly aggressive with your staking you will run the serious risk of making significant losses, which will not only take longer to recover, but will create pressure that you do not need.

Betting should be Boring! If your pulse is starting to quicken, you are either staking out of your comfort zone, or employing a system that you are not confident with. You should be doing neither of these things!!

Poolstars Player Pots Wsop Main Event Seat

Natalie Sky asked:

Qualifying for a Poker tournament in an online freeroll is not unusual – but Patrick Smolenaers qualified for the WSOP main event without even looking at a card.

Patrick beat a number of hopefuls in an online pool tournament at PoolStars.com – a new online pool site – with the prize for winning a seat at the main event in Las Vegas.

“There were some online qualifying tournaments at PoolStars in which eight players came through,” said Patrick. “We all played in a final tournament and in the end I won the tournament to win the seat at the WSOP Main Event.”

Smolenaers had to beat top Dutch pool player Nick van den Berg en-route to victory, and said even though his pool was better than his poker, he would give it his best shot. “I’ve played for a few years so I think I can give some lads a real hard time,” promised Patrick. “I’m going to try to make it through day one and then I’ll shift up a gear.”

Patrick also got the opportunity to play pool against Steve Davis, the six-timer World Snooker Champion and Mosconi Cup Pool player, before taking to the Poker table. Davis is an ambassador for PoolStars, the online pool community which is the brainchild of Poker legend Tony G.

“It’s the online equivalent of a poker room, with the ability to play each other over the internet,” Davis explains about PoolStars. “At the moment you don’t play for money but for prizes but eventually you will be able to play for cash.”

Unlike most pool games that you can find on the Playstation or Xbox, there are no cheat lines to help you so it’s tough – really difficult,” said Davis. “It’s a three-dimensional virtual pool game so you have to get used to the perspective of the table. I understand the mechanics of the game which definitely comes into the equation, so if a lot of good pool players played on PoolStars, they would rise to the top because they understand the physics of the game.”

While Patrick mastered the online pool table, he failed to make it beyond the first day at the poker equivalent, finding himself all-in with QQ against AK, with a King on the river busting him out. Davis fared better though, cashing to the tune of $28,950 after making it to Day 4 and finishing in 389th place.

PoolStars is an easy to use set of software – and a great site designed with your ease and fun in mind.
